KFUM:s Kammarkör is a mixed chamber choir of about 30 members, working in the Swedish choirsinging tradition. The choir was founded in 1957 by Dan-Olof Stenlund, now professor of choral conducting in Copenhagen, Denmark. Subsequent conductors have been Häkan Boström, Stefan Parkman and Mats Nilsson. Since 1993, Ragnar Bohlin is the artistic leader.
The Repertoire consists of a broad spectrum of both secular and sacred music, ranging from the renaissance tò contemporary Swedish composers like Lars-Johan Werle and Sven-David Sandström. In the last few years the choir has also collaborated with jazz musicians. The concert programmes are put together to form a coherent whole. Other means of expression are often added - such as recitation of poetry - to combine to a more significant expression.
Though the main part of the repertoire is a cappella works, the choir also participates in larger format performances of for instance Brahms 'Ein Deutsches Requiem, Fauré's Requiem, Handel's Messiah and Bach's St. Matthew Passion.
The Choir regularly tours both inside and outside of Sweden. During the summer 1997 the choir made a 2 weeks concert tour in USA (New York State and Pennsylvania). The choir has also successfully participated in international choir competitions. Among other achievernents, the choir was in 1994 the winner of the international Chorus Camera competition in Rychnov nad Kneznou in the Czech Republic, and shared the award of best choir in the international choir competition in Oskarsharnn, Sweden in 1996.
The choir has made several recordings and has frequently appeared on radio and television, both in Sweden and in other countries.
YMCA Chamber choir is an independent association within the YMCA in Stockholm and has no regular financial support. The choir's very existence is thus to a large extent dependent on the work and dedication of its members.
