The Tampines Junior College Choir made its debut in 1987 and has since then
come a very long way. It was established with the vision of promoting a life-Iong interest
in singing and character building in the areas of discipline and team spirit. The choir
has developed rapidly, chiefly through embarking on increasingly challenging tasks.
Besides performing at college functions, it also holds an annual public concert entitled
Tlaisir de Chanson". The choir engages actively in Christmas carolling at well-known
hotels and shopping malls, adding much warmth and joy to the festival.
Under the leadership of our Choral Director Mr. Nelson
Kwei, the choir has maintained its high choral standard throughout the years and our
various achievernents bear testimony to this. The choir embarked on a tour to Europe in
1993 and participated in the Bournemouth Music Festival as part of the prestigious
Bournemouth Festival of Arts. We were awarded the distinction of being named the Test
Adult Choir of The YeaC. In June 1998, the TPJC Choir went to Europe on a competition tour
and participated in Musica Mundi in Pohlheim, Germany. it was a competition of very high
standards, with more than 100 choirs from countries like Germany, Latvia, Czechoslovakia,
Uzbekistan, Russia, Romania, Hong Kong and Singapore. We are proud that in the face of
strong international competition, the choir did well enough to clinch a gold award in this
competition.
Locally, in 1992, the TPJC Choir's first public
performance was a success, and the Choir capped it all by emerging the champion in the
Cantata Competition organised by the Young Musician's Society, Singapore. In 1993, the
choir received a Gold Certificate of Distinction in its first appearance in the bi-annual
Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Choral Competition. The SYF is a prestigious event
organised by the Ministry of Education, Singapore, to showcase talent in the youths of
Singapore. All participating schools and junior colleges qualify for the prestigious Gold
Certificate of Distinction if they attain a certain level of performance. The Choir
continued to achieve this prestigious distinction award in the subsequent 1995, 1997 and
1999 competitions.
Other achievernents include overseas tours and other
performances. In December 1994, the choir toured Seoul and Honolulu, performing to
appreciative audiences at the St. Andrew's Cathedral and the Royal Hawaiian Shopping
Centre in Honolulu. In June 1996, it went on an educational-cum-concert tour to San
Francisco and visited places like Sacramento and San Jose and performed at various
churches in these cities. These trips provided an enriching experience that exposed the
choir to an overseas audience and enabled them to learn and appreciate different artistic
and cultural standards.
Singapore hosted the World Trade Organisation (WTO)
Conference in December 1996 and the choir was again privileged to perform before an
international audience which included visiting Heads of State and cabinet ministers when
we participated in the Closing Show for the Conference. In June 1997, the Choir was one of
two selected Junior College Choirs which did a recording of specially arranged community
songs for the nation's National Day Parade. The Choir was also privileged to be the only
choir invited to perform at the 1998 National Day Rally by the Prime Minister of Singapore
(which is our equivalent of the State of the Union Address) where our performance was well
received. The Choir was also honoured to perform at the North-East CDC's National Day
Dinner on 7 August 1999 where the Guest-of-Honour was Rear-Admiral Teo Chee Hean, Minister
of Education.
The Choir performed the Mikado on 23rd May 2000 at the
Victoria Concert Hall. This was a College Fund Raising Project spearheaded by the Choir.
We helped to raise S$270,000 for the college - a significant indication of the success of
this concert.
The TPJC Choir has indeed gained much from its public
performances and overseas tours. With continued enthusiasm and commitment to excellence,
the choir is on its journey to greater heights in music making. |
